NUJ Sets Record Straight on Alleged Tenure Elongation

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has responded to allegations of an “illegal” extension of its Central Working Committee (CWC) tenure by six weeks, calling the claims “baseless” and “misleading”.

In a statement, NUJ National Secretary Achike Chude explained that the extension was unanimously adopted by the National Executive Council (NEC) to allow councils to settle their dues and ensure a fair, inclusive process.

Chude noted that over 60% of union chapels had not met their financial obligations, risking disenfranchisement from the upcoming Triennial National Delegates’ Conference.

The statement also addressed allegations by Mr. Abdulwaheed Olayinka Adubi, a fellow journalist, who claimed that the union’s leadership was attempting to elongate its tenure.

Chude emphasized that the NUJ holds free speech in high regard but stressed that it must be grounded in responsibility and not used as a tool for mischief or malice.

The NUJ remains committed to transparency, fairness, and adherence to its constitution, and urges members and the public to disregard the baseless allegations.
