The vibrant city of Calabar came alive with colours, music, and festivities as the Omgbotuche Ayi Yala Welfare Initiative celebrated the 2023 Yala New Yam Festival at the prestigious 520 Kolanut Conference and Event Centre. The event, which was the first of its kind since the inception of the organization, showcased the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Yala people.
Under the leadership of the President Mr. Dominic Ogri, the celebration not only served as a platform to honour the bountiful harvest of yams but also as a testament to the unity and resilience of the Yala community. Despite the challenges posed by unpredictable times, attendees from all corners of the Yala region and beyond gathered to partake in the festivities, showcasing their unwavering support for their heritage.
President Ogri, in his heartfelt welcome speech, expressed his gratitude to the attendees for making the event a success and emphasized the crucial role that wives, friends, and well-wishers play in the community’s progress. He acknowledged the dedication of the new executive committee, organizing committee, and volunteers, as well as the divine guidance that made the event possible. A significant announcement during the speech was the acquisition of a new 18-seater organization bus, which is set to enhance the reach and impact of various community interventions.
Comrade Okori Benard, the immediate past president of the organization traces its origins to the dynamic initiative’s unique name, “Omgbotuche,” derived from the creative mind of Barr. Roland Ipoule, an esteemed member hailing from Yahe Ward. This name, representing unity and collaboration, was wholeheartedly embraced by all founding members, setting the tone for the organization’s journey.
Since its inception in 2018, the Omgbotuche Ayi’Yala Welfare Initiative has grown into a thriving community that stands as a testament to the power of collective action. Committed to uplifting the lives of Yala’s residents, the organization has undertaken a range of impactful projects. These initiatives have brought together people from diverse backgrounds, nurturing a sense of camaraderie that exemplifies the essence of the Yala Nation.
The event also saw the participation of distinguished guests, including the Cross River State Commissioner for Housing, Dr. Mrs. Beatrice Igwe who emphasized the importance of preserving the Yala language and fostering unity for the growth and development of the Yala nation.
The festival featured a range of engaging activities, promising a fun-filled and exciting experience for all attendees. From traditional dances to cultural displays, the event captured the essence of Yala culture and left a lasting impression on the hearts of everyone present.
