FG suspends planned removal of fuel subsidy

The Federal Government has halted its plan to eliminate fuel subsidies by June of this year.

Ahmed Zaniab, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, made the announcement on Thursday, shortly after a meeting of the National Economic Council, NEC, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

She stated that the NEC, which is comprised of State Governors, deliberated on the issue at length and concluded that it would be unwise to remove subsidies while the new administration is attempting to establish itself.

She also remarked that the existing committee that has been discussing the fuel subsidy issue should be expanded to allow more Nigerians to weigh in.

She emphasised the need for increased communication with the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the petroleum marketers’ association, among others.
