Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State has voiced deep concerns over the escalating vandalism of electricity equipment in Bekwarra Local Government Area.
Mr Francis Ekpo, Director General of the State Electrification Agency-SEA, echoed these concerns during the conclusion of an electrification assessment tour in the Northern Senatorial District.
“What we have observed on the ground is profoundly troubling and, to be frank, immensely disappointing,” queried Francis. “The extent of vandalism we’ve witnessed is staggering, leaving virtually nothing in its wake. The damage inflicted is so extensive that it will undoubtedly incur substantial costs for the state to rectify. It’s not just a matter of repairing equipment; it’s about rebuilding trust and ensuring the sustainability of our electrical infrastructure for future generations,” he added.
Aligned with Governor Otu’s commitment to prioritize the needs of the people, the assessment tour aims to evaluate the status of electrification across the region. Governor Otu stressed the critical role of youths, elders, and traditional leaders in protecting vital infrastructure.
Taking a strong but critical position, Francis argued, “what has transpired cannot be reversed, but together, we have the power to halt this destructive trend through collective determination. It is imperative that our youth, traditional leaders, and every member of our community rise to the occasion and take responsibility for safeguarding our electricity infrastructure for the betterment of all. Let us unite in our resolve to protect these vital assets, recognizing that our collective efforts today will shape the prosperity and well-being of future generations.”
During discussions with community leaders and young people, there was a palpable sense of hope and appreciation for Governor Otu’s efforts in addressing their long-standing electricity challenges, with some areas lacking access for over 18-20 years.
Continuing the assessment journey, the Director General engaged with stakeholders in Ogoja and Yala LGAs, rallying support and securing commitments to prevent future vandalism once essential equipment is installed. Local leaders expressed gratitude for the Governor’s proactive stance and pledged their unwavering cooperation.
Recognizing the invaluable support received, the Director General extended thanks to the Northern Senatorial Districts LGA HOLGA for their pivotal role in facilitating the Governor’s directive on the assessment tour.
