As Cross River State gears up for the renowned 2024 Calabar Festival and Carnival, Governor Bassey Edet Otu has approved the immediate installation of solar-powered street lights along the key route from MCC by Mobil to Odukpani Junction. This measure aims to complement the existing street lighting infrastructure, ensuring well-lit and secure roads during the festive season, which draws visitors from across the globe.
The announcement was made by the Director General of the State Electrification Agency (SEA), Mr. Francis Ekpo, who praised the project as a “welcome development” in preparation for the bustling events expected in December. “With this approval, Calabar will be completely illuminated, solidifying our reputation as the ‘State of Light’ as we await the arrival of guests from around the world,” Ekpo said.
Mr. Ekpo noted that the solar street lights will act as a backup for the current system, enhancing the vibrancy and safety of Calabar roads during one of Nigeria’s most celebrated festivals. He added that the SEA and local engineers are working tirelessly to bring the project to completion ahead of the festivities.
In response to recent power outages, Ekpo clarified that the disruptions were caused by a windstorm that recently impacted parts of the state. He reassured residents that the SEA’s engineering team and PHED are working “assiduously” to restore full power soon, and he appealed for public patience as repairs continue.
