The Cross River State House of Assembly is reinforcing its partnership with UNICEF to realize the State’s developmental plan. Under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, the Assembly is collaborating with UNICEF and the executive arm of the government to achieve the development goals set for the state.
During a visit to the Assembly complex in Calabar, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem expressed his enthusiasm for UNICEF’s selection of Nigeria and specifically Cross River State among its operational countries. He emphasized the Assembly’s strong commitment to partnering with UNICEF to successfully execute the five-year development plan.
Ayambem further stated that only a government not prioritizing its people’s welfare would overlook a partnership with UNICEF. He assured that the Cross River State government, led by Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, shares UNICEF’s dedication to the welfare and growth of its citizens.
Former Permanent Secretary of the State Planning Commission, Rev. Joseph Ugbe, highlighted ongoing discussions between the state government and UNICEF to actualize the proposed development plan. UNICEF has agreed to provide support for the state’s development initiatives, aiming to improve the welfare of the people and propel the state’s progress.
Mr. Olusoji Akinleye, Chief of Field Office at UNICEF Enugu Zone, congratulated Speaker Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem on his appointment and commended the Assembly for its support. Akinleye emphasized that UNICEF champions the welfare of children and women in society and operates in over 190 countries, with Cross River State being the sole representative from the South-South geopolitical region.
Akinleye outlined part of the development plan, focusing on aiding children’s survival and well-being from early childhood through adolescence. This includes support for child health, nutrition, education, water and sanitation, and protection against violence and exploitation.
