Yesterday, Tuesday, May 21st, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong moved a motion of Urgent National Importance on the floor of the Senate, seeking an end to the incessant killings and boundary disputes in parts of Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Senator Ekpenyong highlighted the long-lasting boundary dispute between Ukwa community of Odukpani and Isu Community of Abia State, which has resulted in the loss of many lives and destruction of properties. He expressed concern that further reprisal attacks may occur if the Federal Government fails to intervene promptly to restore peace and order in the communities.
The Senate unanimously adopted the motion, condemning the killings and observing a minute of silence in honor of the deceased. The Senate also called for:
-The Inspector General of Police to station a police barracks in Ukwa Community
– The National Boundary Commission to properly demarcate boundaries
– The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs & Poverty Alleviation to provide succor to victims
The Senate’s swift action aims to bring an end to the cycle of violence and ensure peace and stability in the affected communities.
